When should activated carbon in adsorption box be replaced?

Activated carbon does not have a fixed service life.Replacement time depends on waste‑gas concentration,airflow volume,humidity,dust content and actual saturation status.Relying purely on calendar time may lead to premature replacement with unnecessary cost or overdue use causing excessive exhaust emission.Multiple judgment indicators can be used together to determine carbon replacement timing.

First,judge by exhaust gas quality.If obvious peculiar smell persists at the equipment outlet,or online monitoring shows VOC concentration exceeds emission standard,activated carbon is close to saturation and needs replacement.This is the most direct on‑site signal.

Second,pressure difference monitoring.Record the initial pressure drop of new activated‑carbon box.When the differential pressure rises by 50%‑90%compared with initial value,it usually indicates carbon bed clogging by dust,oil mist or organic accumulation.High resistance means carbon has failed and needs to be changed.

Third,working‑condition‑based estimated cycle.

-Low‑concentration organic waste gas,good pretreatment,low dust:6‑12 months replacement cycle.

-Medium‑concentration VOCs,paint‑spraying or printing exhaust with certain oil mist:3‑6 months.

-High‑humidity,high‑dust or high‑oil‑mist working environment:only 1‑3 months.

-For adsorption‑desorption catalytic combustion system:Activated carbon is not replaced frequently.Normally replace every 1‑2 years,when adsorption capacity keeps declining even after complete desorption.

Fourth,visual inspection.Take out partial carbon samples.If activated carbon sticks together,agglomerates,becomes damp,is covered by sticky paint‑mist or oil residues,micropores are blocked physically.Even if running time is short,it must be replaced.

Key reminders for replacement trigger conditions:

1.When inlet gas temperature is persistently above 45°C or relative humidity exceeds 60%,adsorption capacity declines rapidly,shorten replacement cycle accordingly.

2.Once paint mist,tar and viscous substances enter carbon box,regeneration cannot restore performance,direct replacement is required.

3.Do not wait until complete saturation.Replace ahead of time to avoid sudden pollutant breakthrough and non‑compliant emission.

4.Spent activated carbon belongs to hazardous waste in most industrial scenarios.It must be collected and handed over to qualified institutions for disposal instead of random dumping.
