What causes poor adsorption effect of activated carbon adsorption box?

Poor adsorption performance of activated carbon adsorption box leads to unqualified exhaust emission. The main influencing factors cover activated‑carbon quality failure, waste‑gas working‑condition deviation, structural defects of equipment, improper pre‑treatment and unreasonable operation‑management.
First, activated‑carbon‑related problems.Low‑quality activated carbon with insufficient specific surface area and under‑developed pore structure has limited adsorption capacity.Activated carbon reaches saturation after long‑time operation;organic pollutants fill pores and lose adsorption ability without timely replacement or desorption.Powder loss, carbon abrasion and channeling happen when carbon bed is loosely filled, resulting in partial short‑circuit airflow. In addition, carbon material can be contaminated by dust and oil mist, whose pores get blocked physically.
Second, unfavorable waste‑gas inlet conditions.Exhaust gas temperature higher than 45°C seriously weakens physical adsorption;high‑temperature molecules are hard to be captured by carbon pores. When relative humidity exceeds 60%,water vapor occupies most adsorption sites, and organic molecules cannot be adsorbed effectively.Excessive inlet VOC concentration exceeds the design load of carbon box.If waste gas contains dust, paint mist and oil fume without pretreatment, particulate matters quickly cover carbon surface and block micropores.Waste‑gas components containing silicone, sulfur and phosphorus will also degrade carbon performance.
Third, equipment structural and airflow defects.Insufficient carbon filling thickness, too thin carbon bed cannot provide enough adsorption path.Uneven airflow distribution causes gas short‑circuit;most waste gas passes through local gaps without fully contacting activated carbon.Improper box sealing, air leakage of flange and access door lets untreated waste gas directly escape.Unreasonable wind speed:too high filtering velocity shortens gas‑carbon contact time, pollutants flow through without adsorption;too low velocity requires oversized equipment and increases investment.
Fourth, operation and maintenance mistakes.Operators fail to replace saturated carbon on schedule.Pre‑filter is not cleaned or replaced regularly, dust enters carbon box continuously.Fans are mismatched, actual air volume far exceeds the rated processing capacity of adsorption box.For adsorption‑catalytic combustion combined system, insufficient desorption temperature or incomplete desorption makes activated carbon cannot be regenerated thoroughly, adsorption capacity declines gradually cycle by cycle.
For troubleshooting, technicians should check inlet temperature, humidity and pre‑filter condition first. Then inspect carbon filling status, sealing performance and actual airflow velocity.Replace failed activated carbon and optimize pretreatment,so as to restore adsorption efficiency.
